The English Spirit Guide to Father's Day Gifting

Updated: Jun 1, 2020

Send a 'Hug in a Bottle' if you can't visit.

I’m going to start this article with a couple of bold statements.

I know I’d be right in saying that English Spirit have a diverse range of premium spirits and luxury liqueurs. I think I’d be right in saying that the role of the dad in 2020 is almost as diverse as our range of drinks. Gone are the days of the 1950’s image of dads going out as the breadwinner of the traditional family unit. Today, the ‘father figure’ in your life might consist of a single dad, a step dad, two dads, a stay at home dad or mum absolutely smashing it as she doubles up as mum and dad. The 'Lockdown' period might have created even further variations. Maybe dad is home schooling the kids while mum goes out to do her role as a key worker.

No matter who does the ‘dad’ role in your family, Father’s Day is coming up soon and we’ve got some great ways to give them a special thank you from you.

2019 Easter selection of spirits and liqueurs

Like a lot of events in 2020, Father’s Day might have to involve sending a gift rather than actually visiting your nearest and dearest. We like to think of our range as sending a ‘hug in a bottle’. To help you get your ‘hug’ just right, we’ve come up with a list of our recommendations. We also have lots more options online, we can answer any questions about our range, and two special offers that you might like to take advantage of.

Every dad is different so have a read through and see which gift might suit him best. We guarantee all our products will go down better than a pair of socks. Another bold statement but I’m prepared to take the risk!

English Spiced Rum (42% ABV, 50cl) As Rum grows in popularity, why not select a spiced rum from the first distillery to commercially produce rum in the UK? We only make our rums from 100% molasses. Our spice combination is unique with its cherry and hibiscus tones. We can deliver it straight to Dad or if you are seeing him and you can get hold of it, pop in a bottle of Fever Tree Clementine Tonic. We'd then suggest an Alcoholic Assam: A double of English Spiced Rum, a double of tonic, two slices of ginger and a few torn mint leaves.

This is a nice way to say to a rum drinking Dad that he is original, the best and different from all the rest.

Dr J's Gin (42% ABV, 50cl)

We make Dr J’s from our own base spirit (a lot of distilleries buy their spirit in). The base spirit is made from East Anglian sugar beet resulting in our signature smoothness. This is a gin as gin should be with a subtle flavour combination of juniper, citrus zest and coriander. Macadamia nut is used in the distilling process to further enhance the smoothness. The bottle gives you some idea of the classic quality that sits within. If Dad likes the best things in life, then you can’t go wrong with this as a gift option.

(42% ABV, 50cl)

It was World Whisky Day recently and maybe dad used this as a good reason to finish up his usual bottle. Rather than topping him up with the ‘same old’, why not treat him to something bolder? We distil local barley wort five times, to gradually concentrate the flavours. Honey and citrus notes on the nose; rich, roasted malt on the palate, with a hint of sweet tobacco and honey caramel on the finish. Matured in English oak barrels. Dad will get all the flavour complexity of an aged whisky, but smooth on the palate: a spirit in its own class.

Limongino (22% ABV, 50cl)

With Father’s Day falling as summer starts, our ever popular Gin based liqueur will be an absolute winner over the weeks to follow, especially if Dad is at home more than usual. The real lemon makes it zesty, fresh and suitable for all palates. It can be sipped neat over ice or mixed with tonic or traditional lemonade. You might already know that Dad likes a lemony drink, but if you want to take an educated risk and get him to try something new this bestseller of ours is bound to be a hit.

(22% ABV, 50cl)

Talking of best sellers, you just can’t go wrong with our Toffee Liqueur. One of the things I miss most about not having hosted at any events recently is not seeing peoples’ reactions when they taste this for the first time. They instantly recognise that this is the 'real deal' and smooth and sweet without being sickly. Older dads will reminisce about the proper toffee they used to eat as a child, younger dads will just love how easy it is to drink and will make staying in far more enjoyable. The only warning with this one if you buy it for someone, they’re not likely to want to share it.

Our miniature gift sets give a lovely combination of drinks for Dad to try. Maybe you’ve been given the job of getting father-in-law something. Our Spirit gift set is particularly unique as it features 5 different scratch distilled spirits from one distillery: not many distilleries can offer that. It’s a great way to introduce Dad to something special and you can look like you’ve put in more thought than your siblings!

So What Will He Have?

I hope that’s been an interesting read. I have found it useful for ideas as similarly to Mother’s Day, I’ve got to sort a gift from the children for my husband, and a present for my father in-law as well as for my own dad. He’s the traditional type and a retired engineer. More recently he’s taken on the role of hairdresser to my mum whilst they both stay home. I think he’ll be needing a good drop of gin very soon so I definitely know what I’m getting him!

Not Long to Go

Whilst the ‘traditional’ dad role has changed, the tradition of thanking Dad on Father’s Day has been around for over 100 years. This year it falls on Sunday 21st June. We could keep everything crossed that we can take dad out to the pub for a drink or for a meal at a special restaurant, but you don’t have to be a virologist to know that that’s not going to happen. Therefore take a look at our shop page, do get in touch if you’ve got any questions and order by Wednesday 17th June for delivery in time. Don’t forget to use the code ‘shop10’ to get 10% off.

Alternatively here is a great offer if you're looking for a range of our delicious products. It could be that you want to treat yourself as well as Dad and you could set up an online drink to enjoy with him. (You'd be surprised at the amount of people that have learnt to use Zoom recently. You could also be like me and you're doing a lot of Father's Day purchasing. In which case you might want to take advantage of our offer where you buy 6 bottles and get one of those as a gift from us.
